Intracranial EEG evidence of functional specialization for taxonomic and thematic relations

چکیده
The dual-hub account posits that the neural organization of semantic knowledge is segregated by type relation with anterior temporal lobe (ATL) specializing for taxonomic relations and inferior parietal lobule (IPL) thematic relations. This study critically examined this recording intracranial EEG from an array depth electrodes within ATL, IPL, two regions control network, frontal gyrus (IFG) posterior middle (pMTG), while 17 participants refractory epilepsy completed a relatedness judgment task. We observed significant difference between types in ATL IPL approximately 600–800 ms after trial presentation, no differences IFG or pMTG. Within time window, alpha theta suppression indexing cognitive effort memory retrieval was trials trials. These results suggest specialization consistent cognition.

Dissociation of Thematic, Taxonomic, and Integrative Relations
Word pairs may be connected by several possible relations including integrative (denoting a subclass of the head noun; INSTRUCTION – BOOK, a type of book), thematic (related to a common event or theme; EDITOR – BOOK), and taxonomic (shared features and category membership; ARTICLE – BOOK). Prior studies have found greater lexical priming for thematic than taxonomic items, however that may have ...
متن کاملLearning Taxonomic Relations from Heterogeneous Evidence
We present a novel approach to the automatic acquisition of taxonomic relations. The main difference to earlier approaches is that we do not only consider one single source of evidence, i.e. a specific algorithm or approach, but examine the possibility of learning taxonomic relations by considering various and heterogeneous forms of evidence. In particular, we derive these different evidences b...
متن کاملDifferent influences on lexical priming for integrative, thematic, and taxonomic relations
Word pairs may be integrative (i.e., combination of two concepts into one meaningful entity; e.g., fruit-cake), thematically related (i.e., connected in time and place; e.g., party-cake), and/or taxonomically related (i.e., shared features and category co-members; e.g., muffin-cake). Using participant ratings and computational measures, we demonstrated distinct patterns across measures of simil...
متن کاملThe sensory-motor specificity of taxonomic and thematic conceptual relations: A behavioral and fMRI study
Previous behavioral data suggest that the salience of taxonomic (e.g., hammer-saw) and thematic (e.g., hammer-nail) conceptual relations depends on object categories. Furthermore, taxonomic and thematic relations would be differentially grounded in the sensory-motor system. Using a picture matching task, we asked adult participants to identify taxonomic and thematic relations for non-manipulabl...
متن کاملLearning "Generalization/Specialization" Relations between Concepts - Application for Automatically Building Thematic Document Hierarchies
We introduce a new method for automatically constructing concept hierarchies where the concept nodes follow a generalization / specialization relation. Starting from a set of concepts automatically extracted from a corpus, we show how to learn generalization / specialization relations between couples of concepts and how this leads to the construction of the hierarchy. We present an application ...
